CAN'T SLEEP LOVE
WORK IN PROGRESS.
Inspired by a friend venting about their love life and the song "Can't sleep Love" I decided to create a short film, my background in animation started out in 2D and my friends and family were my biggest source of inspiration so I would love to see this project to its completion. All animation is done in Adobe Photoshop.
Can't Sleep Love tells the story of a young person trying to come to terms with their feelings on a rainy evening.
ABOVE - The animatic, I pushed myself to get creative with the storyboards to place the viewer in a position where they're close enough to watch our main character's struggle but ultimately remain at a distance.

ABOVE - The colour script, colour is something I struggle with so I went with a limited palate. Inspired by existing work such as "Lore Olympus" for their use of complimentary shades I wanted to push my understanding of colour, in this film her skin is a shade of pink, the sky is yellow and the room is a deep purple.

ABOVE - Painted backgrounds, this was super fun to personalise the room, I even asked my friend to take some photos of the posters on her walls so that I could incorporate them into the environment.

SHOT 020 - This is roughly what the final film is going to look like although I might take it into After Effects for more polish.

Shot 030 - Breakdown of my animation process, I go in first with the key poses and then use another colour like red to flesh out some of the in-betweens. For elaborate movements like the hand I relied on a time chart to plan it out.

SHOT 055 - I wasn't too happy with the close up eye shot in the original animatic so I expanded on the concept by creating a more emotional close up right before the chorus hits. Here is a breakdown of the rough, lineart, shading process, and pre comp versions.
Stay tuned for more updates on this project!
